Have you ever asked yourself: “Am I my happy In my current job—what is it that I’d rather be doing?” I questioned myself several times during my six years in two stressful jobs for animal welfare. Each time the answer was that I really wanted to be a “Dogologist.” That was the term given me by a friend’s young daughter—I guess because I always seemed to be the person her family called when they had questions about their pets. With a degree in Psychology and experience In understanding how Dogs process information, I prefer to use science-based methods which are force free. I totally believe that this process teaches Dogs to think. The methodology is simple, logical, and helps the Owners and their Dogs to bond more strongly, and communicate more easily.

I am very grateful for the value of my experiences. Some things I could not have learned any other way. Challenges are great educational tools—they make us think outside the box. I began fostering for Pets And People Humane Society when I graduated from high school. After a few years I was asked to work with the dogs who had issues—I was at that time also working as a Veterinary Assistant. I’m a very strong advocate for Positive Reinforcement training. This method has helped the hundreds of animals I’ve worked with—pets with many different personalities and issues.

First time training or Retraining—success Is about TEAM Work—You, Your Dog, and Me!

Let’s play the “WHAT IF” game! If reincarnation is an option—would you return as a Dog? Let’s play the “WHAT IF” game! If reincarnation is an option—would you return as a Dog? I’ve heard many people say—“ I’d love to ‘come back’ as so-n-so’s Dogs—man! they’ve got it made!” Really? I always look those uninformed folks in the eye and say- “Geez–Ya better be careful what Ya wish for!” Before you commit to placing your soul into an animal with That short a life span—That lack of options to control his environment–That painful mental and emotional frustration from the lack of ability to communicate with those he would most like to impress—And That much lack of good judgment in remaining loyal to those sub-humans who constantly inflict harsh physical and emotional abuse for reasons unknown—-Ya better think twice!

For those fortunate Dogs who belong to people who understand the value of having a loyal friend– “Dog people” as we are referred to–folks who cherish their relationship with their family Pets—Yep! For those lucky Dogs life can be a blessing. This kind of existence will mean good food-proper health care-plenty interactive communication with the family-lots of exercise-and a very happy life. For those Dogs who belong to women or men who ‘over-dote’ on Pets—Life can be a game of “Gottcha!” Their Dog is never given any specific parameters–and Is void of impulse control. He or she is allowed to jump on—bark at—nip—lean against or bump any guests of the owner—who are unfortunate enough to visit. SO—-WHAT IF—that Dog suddenly finds it’s self “on the street” so to speak. Who will forgive him or her for the bad behavior they exhibit?. How will that Dog handle ejection? You say– “Hey It’s the owner’s problem—It’s not Your Dog.”—Or–“To each his own.” Or—“Whatever works for them!” Really? Come on—If I can show someone that having a Dog trained to be a good citizen could save that Dog’s life—doesn’t that justify my butting into their business?

Dogs who are led to believe that life is “On Demand” will not survive well if suddenly they find themselves in a real world situation. Lost—alonechallenged by other Dogs and People. Confused at the least—This Dog’s chances are slim. I know that every Dog is happiest when he orshe can fulfill their nature according to their breed and that means helping them learn and earn theJOB for which they were bred. During the process They will develop focus and impulse control. For years there have been so many theories on Dogs and their dependant relationship withhumans– it boggles the minds of those of us who seek the truth. Research Data is updated yearly.

So—WHAT IF we accept the fact that Dogs have 84% of our DNA. What? That’s correct—84 dad-gum percent! That is why my dear friends—they areused in research laboratories. (By the way -Horses 84%–Cows 85%–Mice—88%) What do we do with that kind of information? Does that make you feel closer to them? Well—DNA is a molecule called deoxyribonucleic—which is the carrier of genetic information. It makes each breed of Dog who they are. To me–the major important connection is the similar number of Insidious Illnesses and diseases we have in common—Allergies-Arthritis-Cancer-Diabetes Dental disease —Heart-Kidney-Liver-and so on. 5. Most of these major medical problems can be blamed on OBESITY.

WHAT IF——we had the ability to control what our Dogs eat? OH!—WAIT!—WE DO have control don’t we! WE have control over our Dog’s very life—from the time we accept the responsibility of adding them to our family—until they pass on. Being your Dog’s wise leader may be a challenge, inconvenient and expensive—but it is the right thing to do! Coming back as a Dog—-not the smart thing to do!

“WHAT If” We all started off the New Year determined to make it Memorable in the best of ways! Spread the word my Dear Friends—give advice and aid to those who lack the knowledge of caring for their Dogs. Give them tips for options of training facilities—available Veterinary Care, the names of local rescues and shelters.

We’re “Dog People.” Our Dogs are a part of our 6. Lives—and we’re blessed to have them.I wrote a poem a few years ago—playing the “WHAT IF GAME.” I wondered as a trainer, how I would approach a Wolf to convince Him to join me as a companion. This is what I would do: I avoid his eyes, and whisper softly–“Give me your trust and your mind–I will teach you about my world, andYou will reveal to me your true and Innocent nature.” “Do not test my tolerance for maliciousbehavior—and I will be consistent in patience.” “We have evolved and survived tothis place in time—Let us be friends.”

May the coming year be your best ever!

Pat

If you raise a Dog at eight weeks of age or so, And you got him or her from a reputable breeder,
you’ll have control of that pup’s mind and his or her physical health. Your Dog’s future depends
on the way you manage his or her early life.

I’ve always said that each of us is our Pet’s Basic Trainer. Every time you interact with your
Dogs you teach them something about YOU—Themselves—and the World around them. Your
Dog’s personality, His or Her ability for impulse Control—and social skills—all will begin through
your efforts. If you’re consistent raising your Pet through kindness and care—you’ll have
a great chance for living with a happy, healthy, loving companion.

As a wise philosopher once said-“We are a part of all whom we have met.”

That being said—let’s talk about what to expect if YOU didn’t raise the Dog you just
brought into your family. What do you know about this little guy’s past life? How he was raised—what
kinds of tramatic negative experiences he may have had which will influence his behavior?
There is most of the time this “X Factor” for the majority of the Dogs adopted from
rescues and Shelters.

Statistically—eight million Dogs and Cats In this Country enter shelters each year. About ¾ % are Dogs. Better than ½ % of which will die there. The lucky few will be adopted by folks like you and me.

Do we ever wonder why they are there? Let’s think about that. Let’s ask ourselves a few
questions: Did they escape their home environment and couldn’t find their way back? Were they brought to the shelter by their owners? For what reason? Were they Puppies born and not wanted? (Those owners need to have ‘Spay And Neuter’ tattooed on each hand!) Were they Dogs who became Aggressive? What was that about?

Have you ever wished that they could tell you the story of their lives? We basically know what they are subjected to when they’re picked up—or owner-surrendered. They’re introduced to the local Pet Penal system. What they endure is a pretty stressful—The routine goes like this: Examination—Injection–Castration–Incarceration. Sound like fun?

Those of us who work hard advocating for Pet Adoptions give these little critters cute
Catchy names—We lie sometimes about their DNA—and Always try to comfort and socialize
them with People and other Dogs while in the Shelter or Rescue to help their chances for
Re-homing. It’s pretty amazing that some of these sweet Dogs can hide their anxieties—set aside their Fears—and cooperate with the folks handling them as agents of their future. These Dogs who
can more easily adapt are best qualified to re-enter society And find loving homes.
Still—there is a mysterious similarity to the behavior of all adopted Dogs. Are you aware of
it? Do you see it –or sense it? Let me give you a few examples—-do these sound familiar?

Your new little guy—jumping around happily– then as you accidentally drop a jar lid to the floor or call out loudly to one of your kids—he flattens his ears—and runs—or throws himself down in a
submissive position. Or– he runs to hide behind something as you correct one of your other dogs.
Or–Sadly you discover that your adoptee has never had a Toy. Or—hearing him moan and whine is his sleep. (Oh yes. Research Science tells us that they do dream!) I could go on and on listing the symptoms of Dogs experiencing recall of some traumatic issue. Some symptoms are very subtle—but very distinct and discernable to those of us who for years have volunteered and fostered. A Dog’s behavior flows from three main sources: Desire—Emotion—and Knowledge. Dogs are born with open minds. As they grow, and experience life—they learn. We as care givers need to be reminded of the responsibility of Dog ownership—whether we raise them—or adopt them.

I have a few tips for those adopters who didn’t realize the necessity of having a plan when the new kid joins the family.

1. Try to communicate effectively with your new Dog through gentleness of tone of voice—and
physical actions.
2. Allow him or her to adapt to the family routine as slowly as he or she finds necessary.
3. Give him or her a chance to build confidence by rewarding a small treat for training
accomplishments.
4. Give your newbee as much interactive exercise as he or she wants.

I promise you there would be far fewer ‘returns’ if adoptees would consider the new family addition a ‘project’. Folks need to have patience—and understand that these Dogs need to regain the ability to trust! The other option to solving the problem of Your Dog’s ‘History Mystery’ is to write a fictional background about his or her life.
